True thickness can be measured by using two precision laser measurement sensors. These are set in a U shaped frame with the two sensors facing each other. The measuring range of the thickness measurement sensors should overlap. This allows the material under test, whether it be plastic film, foil, wood, aluminum, copper or other metals; to move in the gap while remaining in range. The sum of the two readings is the thickness measurement of the material under test.

This system is suitable for the thickness measurement of a wide range of materials. It can measure thickness of plastic film, foil, wood, aluminum, copper and other metals. Coated foils such as Lithium battery electrodes can be accurately sensed. Oryx lasers can measure shiny foils with black coatings without the need for re-calibration. Even translucent plastic film and glass thickness can be measured. The plastic film, foil, wood, aluminum, copper or other metals being measured does not only have to be in the form of a flat sheet. Features in complex shapes can also be measured.

The high precision U frame is constructed from a single piece of CNC machined aluminum. This insures that the lasers are perfectly aligned. This also allows for a very compact design as the sensors are inside the body of the U frame. This requires the minimum amount of space when mounted on a machine for on-line thickness measurement of plastic film, foil, wood, aluminum, copper or other metals. |

An on-line application to take thickness measurements of metal foil. The calibration holder can be seen to the right of the U frame. The thickness of the U frame is only 50 mm. This allows the film thickness measurement system to be placed in a compact space. |
